- There was a hedge school in our district long ago. There was no other name for it only hedge school. It was in a waste house in Cruckmore. In good weather it was outdoors, and in bad weather it was indoors.
Principally male teachers taught in them. The teachers were strange and poor scholars. Often times there was a school carried on in farm houses.
Teachers lodged in the farm houses if they were able to keep them.
The subjects they taught were reading, writing, spellings, and arithmetic.
In the time of the Penal Laws any teacher found teaching Irish to the pupils would be punished according to law.
Irish was taught in opposition to the law. The parchment was made from sheep's skin.
The writing was done with goose quills. The pupils were sitting on the floor or stone or block of wood.
There might be blackboards.
The teacher remained from three or six months or longer in each district.- Bailitheoir
