    About the year 1780 there lived in the town of Tralee a celebrated card player.

    and was returning home now at this late hour much the worse as the result of a night's debauchery. These nocturnal bacchanalian amusements were common in Kerry among the Landlord class at this period so the poor card player was certain that lucky time had come at last in that late November night. His new acquaintance produced a note from his pocket and requested that the card player sign his name on it as a proof that he was willing to carry out his part of the contract and accompany him that night twelve months to the regions where he ruled. The card player signed his name.
    The gentleman in evening dress now became very polite and handed his large purse of sovereigns to the other, telling him not to be short of money at any time and that he would win in future at cards. The card player reached his cabin in the town safely and was well pleased at his night's adventure in meeting the intoxicated landlord as he thought. He slept soundly that night having first counted and secured his gold. When he awoke in the morning he believed the work of the previous night was a dream. He strode stealthily to he hiding place where his gold lay. It was no dream there was the gold and the "landlord's" purse. He feared now that the sheriff would be soon at the door of his cabin leading
