A lot of people died on the roadside. It is often that families closed their doors and every one of the family died one by one.
Thousands of people went to workhouses and in the end there wasn't enough room for them.
On account of the people dying a fever broke out around the country: a lot of people went to America and other countries to earn a living, but most of them died on the way out, they were so weak, and their bodies were cast into the sea.
It is said that about a million people died and that about another million went to America.
