A Song
“my name is Patrick Kenny I'll never deny the same”
After the hanging of Poff and Barret, Earl Spencer, the Lord Lieutenant came on a visit to Castleisland and Patrick Kenny of Ballymacadam, who was chairman of the local Land League, went and shook hands with him and the following song was made for Kenny.
My name is Patrick Kenny I'll never deny the sameAnd near Castleisland I reside, that ancient place of fameAmong my friends and neighbours I lived in high rnownTill Earl Spencer came one day scavenging through the townI did not go to speak to him twas he that spoke to meHe passed me many compliments, his talk was frank and freeBut though his speech was quite polite and all his smiles were blandTwas wrong I know to meet him so and shake his gory hand.
(II)Tis well I remember the moment that he spokeThe honest men he doomed to death, the gallant hearts he brokeThe wicked crew he paid and hired to keep our land in thrallBut yet by some unlucky chance I quite forgot it all.
(III)The members of the Land League they tried me for the crimeAnd from the post of Chairman dismissed me for a timeBut soon I hope they'll pardon me for well they ought to knowI fought and suffered for the cause not very long ago.
(IV)I'll take a trip in Dingle Bay, a Turkish bath in Cork(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
