- Bread was made from oats grown and ground locally. Nobody here remembers flour made locally. Ovens are not remembered as being in use, but remains of them can still be found.
Bread in use was potato-cake Boxty bread and oat-bread.
Potato-cake was made by kneading oat-meal and boiled potatoes together this was cooked on the griddle.
Boxty-bread - was made by grating raw potatoes, and mixing it with oatmeal.
Oat bread was made by mixing oat meal and boiling water into a thick paste and baking it before the fire on a gridiron, this was made of iron.
Water was always used in the kneading process.
Bread was baked every day except Sundays.
A cross was marked on the top of the bread to let out the steam. Oven griaale and gridiron were used in bread baking.
