  1. Old fair was held at Castleshane on the 21st May. It was for children only & they went from house to house on their way and got 1d to 2d each. Five or six old women came from Monaghan with donkeys & carts selling sweets & all kinds of fruit. Whoever could make worst "car" (special expression) would get an ounce of tobacco. Young people would go to play cards or shoot marbles or gamble. Women came out from Monaghan to sell biscuits & lemonade & sugar-stick.
In the 'forties there was a fair held in Middletown & party riots started on Thursday & after that it was called Story Thursday & that stone throwing stopped the Fair. They started the Fair again about '75 & it was well attended with cattle & they came from Ballybay & Keady (Co Armagh) & Castleblaney. Nearly all came to see the newly started Middletown fair.
