- (continued from previous page)long were used. Candles made from the fat of cows or goats were also used. A "buaiceas" made from cotton threads dipped in melted tallow was also used. So also were rushes dipped in tallow. Candles were made locally. There was a mould in almost every house.
A piece of bog - deal two feet long and six inches in diameter was placed in the fire. This frequently supplied light to the house. It was called a smucán or smulán of bog - deal.
