- Ross Castle Killarney
This castle stands on the north-eastern shore of Lough Lein less than two miles from the town of Killarney.
Legend of Castle.
Ross Castle was built in the fourteenth century by a hereditary Lord of the Lakes O'Donohue Ross whose material & even magical achievements added glamour to a District already drenched with romance world-old.
It seems that emulating Faustus, O'Donohue's knowledge of magic endowed him with power of transformation & all went smoothly until a demonstration was demanded by his wife. He refused her request repeatedly & at last he relented but warned her not to show any fear or if so they would be separated for ever. His wife promised to abide by his advice. Retiring to his study in the tower her Lord assumed some blood-curdling shape whereupon the Lady shrieked in terror. The contract being thus broken O'Donohue sprang through the window & disappeared in the waters below.
