When he came he demanded to be allowed in to say mass and pointed out the order of the bishop, but without avail. He tried to go in by a window but a number of men pulled him back, and in so doing, tore his coat. Feelings ran very high, but the people refused to open the church. It is not known how many Sundays the church was kept closed, but finally the bishop, himself, came in his carriage to settle the question. When he saw the people so determined he merely asked what were their demands. O'Connor of Milltown, a gentleman of the parish, spoke and answered that Baslic was a parish for centuries, with its own priest and that the people were not satisfied to be joined to any other parish.
