The inscription was written in verse as follows:-
"Let him who loves his county drop a tear,
Revere this spot, a patriot's bones lie here,
This place is sacred to James Plunkett's name
Who Major was if that be ought to face
For Erin, dangers he often underwent
For Erin's Isle full thirty years he spent
In after years when the aged sire
Shall tell his son his bosom all on fire
Here is where the hero Plunkett lies
Whose noble spirit is above the skies
