- Many crafts were carried on in this district long ago but now most of them have disappeared. The cooper was a very important man at that time. He made firkins, churns and barrels of wood. The firkin was a very useful article because the people brought their butter in it to the market. Now this is all done with because the people send the milk to the creamery and no longer make the butter at home. In Portnahully the cooper was William Foley. Walsh was the cooper in Ballygorey and his descendants are still called the 'Coopers'.Long ago they had no machinery for making nails so they had to be hand made. The man who made them for the people around here lived in Waterford and was called "White the Nailer".Weavers were scare in this district but there was one in Aglish named Thomas Finlay.
