During a month of June in the Penal Days all the people in the parish of The Rower were hiding in the loneliest parts of the parish. There was one girl captured in Raheenduff. Her name was Harrington. She did not know that the English were coming to the parish, and they shot her on the road.3.
In Mr. Lyng's field of Carrenroe there was a little church where some of the people of The Rower used to hear Mass.4.
There were a lot of altars built in the parish. There is one in Kilconly in a field of ours. There is another in Walsh's field of Ballavarra and another in Carrenroe.5.
Priests used to go around the parish and say Mass in the houses at night time as the people used to be afraid to be seen going out to Mass in the day time. But if the priest was caught saying Mass he would be either burned or flogged. The people suffered a lot but they kept the faith. The remains of some of these old altars, and churches are still to be seen.
