When he was returning home that night tired and hungry, he lay down by the roadside, and fell asleep. He knew he had no use going home to his wife without his day's wages. While he was asleep the fairies came to reward him for his good act towards them. Gobbán was not a good tradesman because he was not able to sharpen his tools. While he slept that night his tools were by his side, and the fairies came and sharpened them for him.
It was morning when he awoke and he again set off in search of work. He went in the direction of the king's palace. When he reached the palace he met the king, and asked him for some work.
