    into the hands of the Duiske monks. Food, fuel and other supplies were dispatched daily from Duiske Abbey to Killenny. In those days a road or path led from Duiske beside the Barrow to Killenny. A mule took the load of foodstuffs and other supplies each day without any driver, having been trained to make the double journey unattended by any person. It performed this service with unfailing regularity and complete satisfaction for a number of years, but one day the provisions were stolen and the faithful mule was thrown into the Barrow. When the abbot heard of the outrage he predicted that the thief and his family should be marked for seven generations, which was fulfilled by each member of that family having in youth as well as in age a patch of white hair on the top of the head.
    During the fourteenth century Leinster was in a disturbed condition owing to the ill-feeling between the native Irish and the Anglo Norman settlers. The abbey suffered much from
