Marble works:- Some years ago there was a big marble works at Maddoxtown Co. Kilkenny. There were about one hundred men employed there with houses built around the works for the men to live in.
They brought green marble from Connemara and red marble from Cork. They also used the Kilkenny marble which is black and grey and the white came from Italy.
There was also a saw mill where the stones were cut into slabs with big iron saws worked by a big mill wheel in the water. I believe there was a paper mill there many years ago. The works are closed now.
