    They left their homesteads in bleak despair
    Their aged parents starving and daily mourning
    With nothing left them, bu the open air
    As I moved along to view the landscape
    No cheer or laughter came from vale or glen
    The only sound that did break the stillness
    Was the ring of crowbars from the Sheriff's men.
    As I moved on further through desolation
    The bleak walls of cabins were all met my eye
