- The Hedge School.
Long ago there was a hedge school
in Rathdowney. It was situated on the
bog road leading to Mointrath. Now
it id only a sand-pit on Mr Dumpy's
land.
A man by the name of
Gusty Lamb taught this school. He was
a student in France but his people
were not able to keep him there.
He only taught his pupils in
summer and he worked for the
farmers in winter and he taught
the farmer's children. The farmers
gave him a little money food and
clothes and lodgings. He did not
teach his pupils the same as same now and he made his drawings on
the clay floor and the boys sat all
around on stones.
After that the first
National School was built the same
years as the brewery and it is now
the C.Y.M.S hall.
