- The most famous poet in this district is John Keegan. He was born in a little hut on the Bank of the River Nore in Shanahoe. He went to school to one of the Hedge-school masters named Thomas Moloney, the last hedge-school master in Ireland. Some say that John Keegan was the last hedge-school master, but others contradict that.
He wrote some good poems namely "The Holly and Ivy Girl" "The Girl in Gray" "Caoc O' Leary" and "Keegan's Frarewell to the Nore". He was supposed to be sixty years of age when he died. He was buried in Shanahoe beside his father and Mother. He contributed poems to the "Leinster Express" and the "National" Newspaper.- Faisnéiseoir
