- In olden times each district in Ireland was well supplied with craftsmen. It was not confined to cities or larger towns. About two miles west of Mountrath there was a foundry & some very good mettle work turned out, and this was at : Crannagh : on the banks of the river Nore. In Mountrath cooperage was a great trade, & up to about twenty years ago when the last survivors of the great trade passed away. Those people were William, Frank, & Thomas Dooceys. They made churns, & all class of butter requisties, Kellers, ferkins. Weaving also flourished here up to about seventy years ago when it was given up owning to British Rule.
