- The people long ago delighted in using proverbs aptly. Many of those proverbs were spoken in Irish, or translated from the Irish version. The following proverbs were the most commonly spoken and known.
''Be first in a wood and last in a bog'' probably originated about the time when bogs and woods were plentiful in Ireland.
