Castleard means the tall castle. It is called after a high castle which stood there once
Brosna means a small tree. The old people say that long ago persons came down from the North and planted some trees there. These have now grownup and have formed a "Cooleen" or small woods.
Tonroe means the red hole. It is called after a big hole in that district into which the leaves are put in autumn. When they rot they turn red and they are used for manure.
Moinee means a small bog. There was a small bog in that district but it was reclaimed.
Ardvarna or "An Bhearna Ard" means the high gap.
Bochthaduff meaning the black bog is called after a bog in that district. The turf which is got from it is very black.
Culladine (coill a ine) means the wood of ivy.
