Tales of the wildest kind are told about one Tomas Laidir who lived at Tallaghan Rock, about two miles from Ballaghaderrin and quite close to the palace of Most Rev. Dr. Morrisroe, Bishop of Achonry. Tomas was a member of a branch of the Mc Costello family who for generations were landlords of this area.
The story goes that one evening when Tomas returned from school he was told that soldiers had taken away their cattle and were proceeding towards Sligo with them. Tomas, renowned for his great strength, first satisfying the cravings of the inner man by cleaning up the dinners which had been served for a meirheal of men, went forth to intercept the soldiers on their march.
