- In olden times the people of Carracastle, where I first lived, did not use the same foods as we do now. They had not as many dainty foods as we have now. They lived on two meals a day, breakfast and dinner. The breakfast was eaten at about 10 o'clock and the dinner about four o'clock.
The men worked about two or two and a half hours in the fields before breakfast and the women worked the same length indoors. Breakfast consisted of potatoes, buttermilk and salt. Dinner was something the same except that occasionally that had salt herring and on very rare occasions a bit of bacon. Potatoes were eaten at both meals. They had buttermilk with every meal.
