  1. The different kinds of bead used by the people in older times were oaten bread, ponkogs, boxty and potato cakes. The farmers grew their own wheat and oats which they got ground in a local mill owned by Andy Bones. The people usually made oaten bread which consisted of a mixture of oaten meal, water and salt baked against a gridiron about half a foot from the fire. They made enough bread for a week at a time as oaten bread does not get stale very quickly.
The boxty was made from raw potatoes scraped into a basin and with flour and salt baked in a pan.
