- The Churn
We have a churn at home. It is a barrel churn. The barrel is about 3 feet high and 2 feet wide. The stand is about 4 feet high and about 3 feet wide.It was made by a cooper about 20 years ago. It holds 30 gallons and we churn every week. A person keeps turning the handle for some time. Then cold water is put in the churn in the Summer and hot water in the winter. This is continued for about three quarters of an hour. Then the churn is rocked and the butter is taken off with a saucer. some of it is put in rolls and some of it is made into prints.Long ago if a man came into a house where the people were churning he would have to churn for a while.
