- The time in which most marriages take place locally is Shrove. The reason why most marriages take place in Shrove is because people cannot marry in Lent which follows Shrove.
May is thought an unlucky month to get married and Friday an unlucky day. Some people are of the opinion that if a marriage takes place during Shrove it is always a happy one. It is a usual thing for people to make each others matches round this district & it is believed that if a woman makes a match that the husband & wife never agree. It is a usual thing for the father of the bride to give a certain sum of money to her. It was the custom for a portion of land or stock to be given as a dowry about a hundred years ago.
About sixty or seventy years ago people used to get married and make matches at wakes & corpse-houses. People generally get married in the morning & then spend the day motor touring(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
