- A few miles from my residence lie the historic plains of Rathcroghan which were formerly owned by Colonel Chichester. He also owned the estate on which my school is built.
The meaning of the word Rathcroghan according to the ancients is "O'Connor's Fort. Perhaps this name is derived from the time of the O'Connor kingship in this province. However, the place is noted for its caves which extend from there to the town of Boyle. Near the entrance to one is the grave of King Daithi - the last pagan king of Éire - who was buried in full regimentals with his golden crown upon his head.
