St John's Day
All people have bon-fires on that night at the crossroads. During the day they gather the turf and sticks and bones. A big fire is lighted and all the people sit down around it playing games, dancing and singing. They stay there until the fire dies out. When going home they bring a sod of turf home with them.
Feast of the Assumption
On this day people all over the country come to Knock Co Mayo to preform stations. Many invalids are cured through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin who appeared there many years ago.
St Martin's Day
People kill fowl in honour of St Martin and sprinkle the blood on the four corners of the house and on the door path. They ask the blessing of St Martin on their home for the year.
Hallowee'n
On this night children go "ducking" for apples in a tub of water. Boys pull cabbage and break it on the roads and throw it against doors and also break(continues on next page)- Collector
