- Old people say that food in olden times was very different from what it is at the present day.Potatoes and meal were the principal foods in bygone days. The potatoes in those times were indeed very poor, and many an old person tells that it was often he brought to school with him. Old people tell of how they had to store the potatoes in the loft in the kitchen to try to harden or 'season' them, as they say. They could not eat them after digging them as they were all juicy and 'watery' and they may be often months in the loft before being used. They ate them three or four times a day long ago with 'a grain of salt and a sup of milk'. People often did a half-days work long ago before having their breakfast.
