    been driven in 1038. The attempt was unsuccessful as they were opposed by a strong body of the inhabitants of Oneachach or West Carbery.

    The city was in possession of the Danes at the coming of the Normans.
    It was then the capital of the Desmond territory.

    When Henry II reached Cork in 1172, Dermot McCarthy, Prince of Desmond, was one of the first to acknowledge the sovereignity of the English King.
    MacCarthy's followers did not apparently approve of the action of their Prince as we find that the English Governor, appointed by Henry, was obliged to withdraw, when the Desmond Prince resumed possession of the city once again.
