Some fifty years ago young boys went, as usual to pluck the pears from the tree. The owner of the land was annoyed, as the grass was trampled on. To allay his temper he immediately cut the branches off the tree. From that day to this it has no borne fruit. It is now a decayed stump overgrown with ivy. In the morning following the cutting of the branches the owner of the land found his pony strangled, in a most mysterious manner, beside the tree.
Such is the tale as related by the local peasantry, who refrain from comment, but look wonderingly on their hearers. Old women sign themselves with the "Sign of the Cross" and pray.
