- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)last bet he strikes his customer's hands. The buyers often come from far away counties. If there are good prices and brisk demands for their animals the people are in good spirit. When there is a house or a colt sold it is usual to give a halter with it.
- There are many fairs held throughout the year. There is a monthly fair held in Donoughmore, Coachford and Macroom. Tolls are paid on entering the fair at the following rates, sixpence for cattle, and three pence for pigs. If you do not sell you not pay the toll. The bargain is concluded when the buyer and the seller strike each other's hands. There is a famous horse-fair in Millstreet on the first of March. Mallow horse-fair is held on New Year's Day. When the horses are sold the owner generally leaves a halter or a piece of rope go for luck.
