- We have a churn at home and it is three and a half feet in height. It is two feet wide on the bottom and twenty ins. wide on the top and the sides are round. It is about five years old.
The various parts are the lid, the dash, the bottom, and the crib of the churn. The man who makes the churn is called a cooper. The butter is three times during the Summer and twice a week during the Winter. My mother and sister do the churning. Strangers who come in during the churning always take the dash because it is an old custom. Some people say that if the stranger did not do that the woman of the house would not have the usuall amount of butter.
The churning takes about half an hour and it is done by hand. The dash is always moved up and down. When the butter comes up on the dash in little pieces it is made. During the(continues on next page)- Collector
