“ON the farm of Miss Downey.....”
(1) On the farm of Miss Downey, Tralibane situated about 100 yards south of the public road which runs through the townland, is an underground 'cavern,' known locally as the "'Danes' Hole". This is situated in a level field of average size. There is an opening leading down to it, just about large enough for a man to slip through it.
The 'floor' is about 8 or 10 feet underneath the surface, and the 'Hole' consists of a corridor running along straight, arched, or covered overhead with stone, about five feet in height. At either side of this corridor are extensions something resembling cells, but small in size. As the name indicates, the people locally believe it was constructed by the Danes, but, whether it was used as a 'dwelling', or as protective fort in time of attack, or danger, is not known. It is not frequented as a rule, and the local people more or less shun it. In other words, they consider it unlucky to have any interference with it.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
