- Hurling was the great public amusement. Horse racing was common too. There was dancing at the pattern - they called it a cóthalán - every Sunday. And there was the faction fighting.
People hadn't much leisure for home amusement. Cards used to be played - "Forty five" was the game usually played - and there used to be storytelling. Travelling men or women would often spend a night, and they had a lot of news, and they entertained the people of the house with stories and songs. Many of these travelling people were very respectable, and were courteously treated. They had usually been evicted, or had met with some other misfortune. But a lot of the night was taken up with the spinning, the pounding and hackling and drawing flax, and things like that.- Faisnéiseoir
