Co. Cork. - The townland in which I live is called Cummeen, in the parish of Donoughmore in the barony of Muskerry. There are ten families in Cummeen and about fifty four people in it. Four houses in it are thatched, and six slated, five of the slated houses are two story and in some of the thatched houses a ladder is put up and there is a loft over one room. One resident of the townland is over seventy.
Many stories are told as to how Cummeen got its name. Some people say it may have got it from the irish word cúm, meaning a bend. It is shaped with a kind of bend on one side of it and people say that it may have derived its name from this cúm or bend.
Other people say that one of the fine silver hounds was kept in Cummeen when they had all gone from(continues on next page)- Collector
