- The houses long ago were much different from what they are now.
The houses long ago were (much) mostly thatched. The floors were made of earth. The fireplace was nearly always at the gable-wall of the house. The front of the chimney was made of mortar and stones. There were no chimneys in some of the old houses, but they used big iron pipes for chimneys. They also used to have no glass in the windows but iron bars. Wood that was mostly used for firing. Bog-deal , splinters, candles, rush-lights were employed for giving light at night.- Faisnéiseoir
