It was an old custom in this district for a large party composed of young boys and girls and married persons to assemble on Shrove Tuesday night, carrying a rope held at each end, to go around the village roping in every maid and bachelor the met, who had not succeeded in securing a life partner during the Shrove. These were conveyed for some distance to the west of the village where they were finally released and driven some further distance on their way to Skellig.
