The smith makes shoes for jennets and donkeys and shoes them. He also makes iron gates and repairs various kinds of agricultural machinery. His chief work in the open air is the banding of wheels, for this purpose he makes a large fire of turf some distance from from the forge to heat the iron bands. When they are red hot he sledges them on to the wheels. In the Summer he shoes horses outside. In former times people came to the forge to hear the latest news and to discuss politics.
