- In the penal times the English would not allow the Irish to practise their religion. The priests had to say mass in glens or on rocks. The priests were hunted and killed and five pounds were given to anyone who would bring a priest's head to the English.
I heard of two Mass Rocks one was in Scarteen in the Barony of Duhallow, and in the County of Cork. This was called Carraig an Aifreann.
There was another Mass Rock in Meentinna. Meentinna is in the parish of Clonfert, in the Barony of Duhallow and in the Co. of Cork. This Mass Rock was called Cnocáin-na-Paidreacha. I obtained this from my father M. LinehanJames Linehan
