- In each district some time or other hedge schools were held ; and the neighbouring children were taught in these schools. One of these hedge schools was situated about a mile and a half from the town of Kanturk, at a place called Kilcaskin, in the parish of Castlemagner, Lombardstown Co. Cork. There was an attendance of about twelve or fifteen boys at this school. The school was held in a barn or in an old stall. Each pupil paid a penny a week to the teacher for instruction. A man of the name of Mr. Mc Carthy was the teacher ; and the farmers used to give him his meals. This man had only his left hand, but he was a fine writer. He used to stay in a district for a few months. The children used to learn to write on slates.
