- There was such a powerful and well-organised Branch of the Land League in Knocknagree that I venture to give an account of its growth and work. As I have explained in Pages 128-129 the failure of the potato-crop and turf left destitution and cold. The evictions in March 1880 of the Scrahan tenants made the remaining tenants alive to their predicament. Mr. J.C. Kerlihy (see page 139) gave me the following:- "My uncle, Thady, was always an extremist and although an Assistant Teacher in the School bestirred himself in 1880 and got some of the farmers together to form a branch of the League. The old Gearalrac and Dairíneac spleen was still felt but he very wisely and diplomatically made a Gearalrac the Chairman and a Dairíneac Secretary and so on. The plan worked well and with the Landlord's threats over their heads they soon 'buried the hatchet' and the League became very powerful." He told me that the meetings were held weekly after Mass in Davy Murphy's, Eugene Cronin's (now John O'Keefe's) and in Patsy Nolan's (now Mike Walsh's) At the meetings the "Nation" newspaper was read and(continues on next page)
