Shops were not common in olden times. People had to go to Cork for purchases twice a year in a horse and cart. Buying and Selling was carried out after Mass. This is still practised. Potatoes were given in exchange for goods
labour was given for goods & person gave his horse to the shopkeeper for goods. It was said to be unlucky to go on a journey connected with business on a Monday.
Hucksters used to come to the district
A woman nicknamed Nan Vaig used to come to the district. A man named Anthony Calvey. The names for the different coins are A penny (a copper) a shilling (bob) a sixpence (tanner) a threepenny bit (a kids eye)
