  1. I know that nature's flowery feet are treading now the fields I know
When all the world was fresh and young and boyhoods heart beat bold and true,
But I fast tethered by sad care, a sorrowful shrouded life must dwell,
Like captive bird within the cage whose blithest notes some sadness tell.
Full many a time in vanished years, ere yet my feet had learned to stray,
Far from the pleasant paths of youth to taste the toils of life's highway,
I've hailed the spring with rapturous heart, which now alas' is mine no more--
Ah! vanished long is boyhood's prime, and all the joy of life is o'er.
Yet tho' the cross of care which all must bear along this vale of tears,
May sorely press the poet's heart--one golden star illumines and cheers,
My native land! as brave art thou as fair thy hills and valleys green.
As holy too thy deathless cause as when it woke my boyhood's theme.
