- 114Food In Olden Times.The people lived on three meals a day in olden times. Porridge or gruel made from yellow meal with skim milk was the morning meal. Oat-meal porridge was used only by those who could afford it. The dinner consisted of potatoes and dip; meat was a rarity, used only during Christmas times. Potatoes and sour milk was the evening meal. In houses where potatoes were plentiful, potatoes were used three times a day. If a person chanced to call at one of the farmers' houses during meal times, it was no uncommon sight to see the kitchen table on the(continues on next page)
