    PARISH OF SHANDRUM
    In Miltown demesne are vestiges of a castle of the Fitzgibbons. This castle was of great strength and was unsuccessfully besieged by the Irish Party in the Civil Wars of 1640. Maurice Fitzgibbon of Miltown in the reign of Elizabeth assisted by his four sons, all men of fine physique slew John Mac John Fitzgerald of Kilbolene and fourteen of his followers - Fitzgerald having instigated the Earl of Demond to hang one of the Fitzgibbon family a short time previous. The castle was subsequently demolished and the Fitzgibbon estate forfeited to the Evan’s family and by marriage came into the possession of the notorious George Gulliver Bruce.
