  1. LIOSCEARBHAILL
    Liscarroll is a village in the parish of the same name, barony of Ossory and Kilmore, Co. Cork, seven miles north west from Buttevant, four from Dromina. The population in 1831 was 666, in 1882 was 380, and in 1911 only 287. The place is distinguishable for the remains of an ancient castle, said to have been built in the reign of King John and which for many years wa possessed by the Barrys before it came into the hands of the (Earls of Egmont) Percivals (ancestors of the Earls of Egmont) whom it subsequently belonged.
    In the civil wars of 1641 it was twice besieged. On the first occasion it was garrisoned by Sir Philiph Percival and so strongly fortified that it maintained a resolute defence for thirteen days against General Barry by whom it was besieged with an army of seven thousand foot and eight hundred horse and a train of artillery. On the day following the surrender a sanguinary engagement was fought beneath the walls by a large force of the Irish party under Mountgarrett and Parliamentarians under
