   Of all the local traditions none has, over a wide area, caught hold of the imagination or mystified the student of athletics so much as the great high jump of William Freeman about a hundred years ago, at Ballymague in the south-west corner of the parish at a shot which is known to this day as "Freeman's leap". It was said to be 7 feet 8 inches in height; and so widespread was the belief in its authenticity, based on the evidence of eyewitnesses, that a strong case was made out for recognition as a world's record at a conference of highest athletic authorities held in Brimingham over fifty years ago.

   As, however, after much stirring by highly-trained specialists, the best jump in the past half-century has been only 6 feet 9 ins, the most ardent believer in local achievement must pardon a little scepticism as to actual height of the
