- There are six forges in Mallow and their names are:-
Mr. Barrell behind Clock house, (mostly Iron repairing)
Mr. Lyons. St Joseph Rd
Mr. Daly. Quan's Lane.
Mr. Fitzgerald. Chapel Lane.
Mr. Mc Carthy. Jones Lane.
Mr. Callaghan. Millstreet. (near cross roads)
Mr. P Murphy Ballydaheen (about 70 yards from stream)
All have been smiths for many years. The most of these forges are situated in lanes. Mr. Fitzgerald's forge in Chapel Lane is a fairly large one, and has a slated rood. The door is of no special shape. The implements that are used in the forge are as follows:
The sledge hammer, the vice, knives, pincers, tongs etc. The smith shoes horses and donkeys. The smith also make farm implements such as ploughs and harrows. Bonding wheels is done in the open air. There is an old saying that forge water would cure chill blaines.
Smallwork was looked upon as being a great job at one time because(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
