  1. The population of Rockmills long ago before the famine was 500 there were 360 protestants. There were seven Weavers, carpenters bakers, blacksmiths tailors, tinsmiths and two Hotels. There was a large coal store and the flour mill was working which was known as the second biggest mill in Ireland and the mill wheel was the biggest in Ireland.
There were many protestants living in the Ladge named Aldworths and in the years of the famine they took the children and brought them up as protestant. This Lodge was the first Orange Lodge in the South of Ireland.
The Freemasons were holding a meeting in the Lodge one night and their work was going against them. One man said that they were being watched by someone that was not a member so they searched the room and at last Mr Aldworth found his sister hiding in a large grandfather's clock. He was very angry and said he would shoot her if she did not join so she was the first Freemason woman
